"Tank" and Cartier

"Tank" is a term that is supposedly registered by Cartier. Even though it is common to refer to tank watches when a watch is rectangular, Cartier has informed me [through their New York lawyers] that I should not use tank, tank shaped, tank style, tank-shaped, tank-style or tank like. They say that "tank" refers to their product only. I doubt that tank-shaped [referring to the shape of a military tank when seen from above] would be a violation of their registered tank trademark. To fight this would take such funds, that I will try to refrain from using tank when referring to rectangular wristwatches. What hogwash [IMHO]. If there is any use of this term in these pages, please let me know so I can change tank to rectangular.

Bulova Lined Case

This moderately sized Bulova has a wonder case with molded horizontal lines on the bezel and the sides. The dial has vertical scalloped lines with black numerals and pyramid markers. The 10K gold filled case is in great shape. The amazing thing is that I found TWO of these that are identical. The modest size would make this a nice watch for a gent or a lady--or both? $280.00 Glossary

Bulova Lined Case - 2

This moderately sized Bulova has a wonder case with molded horizontal lines on the bezel and the sides. The dial has vertical scalloped lines with black numerals and pyramid markers. The 10K gold filled case is in great shape. The amazing thing is that I found TWO of these that are identical. This one has three ornate script initials engraved on the back. The modest size would make this a nice watch for a gent or a lady--or both? $280.00 SOLD Glossary

Bulova--Pink Gold Tank

This Bulova is of the small size and style of the 40's. The rose goldfilled case show slight wear on the corners of the back. The wonderful original dial is copper colored with white numerals, markers and hands attractively complementing the case. This is an attractive and hard to find rose gold watch that is in the true style of the vintage watch. $225.00 SOLD Glossary

Hamilton "Cranston"

Because of the sharpness of these wild lugs, these are usually found with wear at the points. This one has no wear to the 10K gold filled case. The original dial is nicely aged to a champagne color and has only minor spotting. The back is not engraved. $325.00 SOLD Glossary

Hamilton "Cushion Form"

Here is a classic. The 14k white 3 piece gold filled case is wonderful, and has "S.B.C." tastefully engraved on the back. The dial is an older redial done in an aging white with painted numerals. There is a small scratch on the dial around 9:00. Perfect for the man or woman looking for the classic appearance of a great watch. $245.00 SOLD Glossary

Elgin Scalloped Bezel

The condition of the gold filled case with a stainless steel back is very nice. There are a few scratches on the back from inept opening attempts, but they do nothing to detract from this fancy bezel. The dial appears to have been redone, most certainly true to the original. I would guess that this style was from the early 50's. $270.00 SOLD Glossary

Hamilton "Gilbert"

Introduced in 1941, the Gilbert is as sleek and modern as any watch made today--and this one is a beauty. The 14K yellow solid gold case is immaculate, and the original dial is aged a little, and very nice. The 980 movement ticks great. It is inscribed with a name and dated Dec. 17-41..what a great Christmas present! $475.00

Hilton

Its all about the case and the dial for this yellow gold colored stunner. It is not marked for gold content, but is most likely gold fill or rolled gold plate. It has a stainless steel back for long wearing. The case speaks for itself with the lined bezel and scrollwork on the sides of the lugs. The dial appears to be original and is textures with lines in the four diagonal quadrants. The movement is by Empire and is 17 jewels. $215.00 Glossary

Hamilton "Robert"

The Robert is a rare Hamilton watch. It is very unusual in the design of the 14K solid gold case with the wild lugs top and botton. The black dial is original and shows very little aging. If you really love this one, check out the ladies "Roberta" on the Ladies page. It is identical except for the size, and would make a wonderful dual purchase for Christmas or Valentines day. $875.00 SOLD Glossary

Rolex "Cushion" Steel

There just aren't enough superlatives for this 1928 wonder. The first Oyster cases were presented by Rolex in the 20's. I believe this one is from the 30's because it does not have the fixed lugs on the plated steel case. They had the "Cushion", and the "Octagon", but the Octagon was not a good seller. The dial is wonderful and I believe original. The movement is signed under the dial, not on the back. These are very much desired by collectors today. The crown screws down like the ones made today, and everything else is 100%--screw back, all the correct markings, serviced and with a high quality strap. There is some pitting on the back $2250.00 Glossary

Rolex "Viceroy"

The Viceroy design includes a case that has the Oyster technology [sealed with a screw back and a screw down corwn] that Rolex pioneered. The design is quite unlike other Rolex cases however. This one has the fairly rare gold bezel that really sets off the three piece case. There is some very minor pitting on the back of the case. The dial has been redone in a striking black with white numerals that is true to Rolex design. This is a manual wind movement. $1975.00 SOLD Glossary -->
