Watch Wardrobe

Here are some of my thoughts on having a "watch wardrobe." This is something that many people give little thought to, but the well dressed person will want to consider.

If you have only one pair of shoes, of pair of pants, one shirt, and one suit, thank you for visiting, but this is probably not for you. I have never understood the thing women have for shoes. They must have a new pair of black shoes because the 18 pairs they already have are not right for the new outfit. I have a couple pair of shoes that I wear for work [office], a pair for work around the home, a couple of pair for athletics, a pair I wear for dress occasions, and some boots for real work. I have watches for different occasions also.

First, let me tell you that "watch people" have way too many watches. No sane person needs anywhere near what we may have. There is always that next watch that we would love to have. They are our "woman's shoes." But, one watch is probably inadequate for the well dressed man. Think in terms of a daily watch, a work watch, and a dress watch.

Daily Watch

Your every day watch should fit with your occupation. Certainly, the person who wears a suit every day would consider a different daily watch than someone who works construction. Fit your watch to your lifestyle. Almost any style of watch can be appropriate for daily wear. The exception is "junk." Please don't use a junky watch--one that is cheap, ugly, and brings you no joy. You will be spending more time with this watch than any other, so make it a watch that you like. I wear a vintage Hamilton on a daily basis. [OK, I switch among several that I really like, but this is a "watch people" thing.]

There are a myriad of choices, from chronometers to l.e.d.s, from tank to round, from inexpensive [not cheap] to rich. If you are hard on a watch [ex: construction] you may want to consider a quartz which is inexpensive, and can be thrown away when the battery dies. It will probably be beat up by then anyway.

Dress Watch

Personally, I think this is the only occasion for diamonds or diamond jewelry for men. I don't have any. You can still have a fairly wide range of choices which would be appropriate for dress. I would certainly tend to gold cases. Yellow gold, white gold, it doesn't matter. You will want to try to coordinate all jewelry. If you wear cuff links, bracelets, shirt studs, or rings, try not to mix the color of the metals. Chronometers may be OK, but smaller and fancier watches would be my choices. And don't forget the band. Certainly, a pigskin band would be less formal than a black lizard one.
